Saltholm Revisited

Loud as a Thousand birds…

Working on the project Saltholm Revisted, I went on a field trip to the islet.

This was in 2019. At that time these birds, the Barnacle Geese, were completely protected. And with only a few natural enemies their population had increased enormously – to an unhealthy extent, really.

They eat grass. Locally on Saltholm it meant that the annual livestock summer grazing had to be reduced and postponed. For the nearby Copenhagen Airport Runways it is a completely different safety problem.

They are beautiful! But oh so noisy...

MATERIALS: Stoneware, porcelain, eroded iron cover. Podium: Linoleum, wood

Saltholm Revisited, 2023 is a ceramic salute to Theodor Philipsen (1840-1920), Danish impressionistic animal and landscape painter.
