COWS ON SALTHOLM
This work began as a ceramic experiment on visual illusion.
Saltholm Revisted is a ceramic salute to Theodor Philipsen (1840-1920), Danish impressionistic animal and landscape painter: Famous for his interpretations of cows - painted in open air on site on Saltholm, a small islet east of Cph Airport.
He often paint backlight, which makes the animals seemingly dissolve into the horizon. A completely natural visual effect. But to me it opens a surreal layer in his work, I tried to follow.
In the process I listened to Queen, for some reason. A documentary on Freddie Mercury and the 1980’s Aids epidemic was shown on National TV. Tina Turner left us. And in mysterious ways, this work also became my Holy Cow Glam Band - a Tribute!
The figures had to have a name anyway, so let me present: Freddie, Elton, Rod, Mr. Stevens - and the wig of Tina Turner 'on Floor'...
